Beyond the famous ham, Jinhua is a powerhouse of private enterprise and ancient architecture.
In short: Located in central Zhejiang, Jinhua is a city defined by its unique Wu-school architecture and a thriving private economy that accounts for nearly 90 percent of its GDP. From its historical roots as a medieval supply hub to its modern status as a major transport nexus, Jinhua remains a fascinating regional center.
Jinhua’s history stretches back to the 2nd century BC, though its modern identity as a prefecture-level city solidified under the Sui dynasty in AD 598. The city’s physical layout, including its walls, dates to the Yuan dynasty in 1352. Today, it is perhaps best known for its dry-cured ham, a local delicacy produced for 900 years, which is celebrated for its four perfections: color, fragrance, taste, and shape. Beyond food, the region is defined by Wu-school architecture, a style characterized by large courtyards and distinctive horse-head walls that reflect Confucian values of symmetry and balance.
Economically, Jinhua is a standout in China for its flexible, civilian-owned market. Private enterprises generate about 88 percent of the city's GDP, with 90 percent of all local businesses operating in the private sector. This industrial base is highly specialized by county: Yiwu is famous for light-industry commodities, Yongkang for hardware and mechanical tools, and Pujiang for crystal ornaments. This diversity is supported by a robust transportation network, including major railway intersections and a metro system, the Jinyidong Line, which opened in 2022 to connect the city's districts with Yiwu and Dongyang.
The city has also become a hub for international education, particularly through its leadership in China-Africa cooperation. Since the 1980s, Zhejiang Normal University has trained over 8,000 African students in fields ranging from software engineering to business administration. With a population that grew by over 1.6 million between 2010 and 2020, reaching 7,050,683, Jinhua continues to evolve as a critical node in eastern China, blending its deep historical roots with a modern, export-oriented industrial strategy that spans from pharmaceuticals to advanced electronics.
