In short: Before becoming a dominant NFL pass rusher and a beloved television host, Michael Strahan spent his formative years in Germany. This unexpected upbringing meant he played very little organized football while growing up, a far cry from the Hall of Fame career that would eventually follow.

Born in Houston, Texas, on November 21, 1971, Michael Strahan’s path to professional football was anything but linear. When he was nine years old, his family moved to Mannheim, West Germany, where his father was stationed as a major in the U.S. Army. Living at the Benjamin Franklin Village Army post, Strahan attended Mannheim American High School and played linebacker for the Mannheim Bison, but the move meant he had very little exposure to organized football during his youth.

His physical transformation began through an intense devotion to weightlifting. Recognizing his potential, his father sent him to live with his uncle, former NFL player Art Strahan, in Houston before his senior year of high school. This move allowed him to attend Westbury High School, where his strength and skill finally met the structured environment of American football. He eventually earned a scholarship to Texas Southern University, where he set a school record of 41.5 sacks over four years.

Strahan’s professional career with the New York Giants saw him become one of the premier pass rushers in NFL history. He set an NFL single-season record with 22.5 sacks in 2001 and helped the team secure a Super Bowl victory in 2008. Beyond the field, his signature gap-toothed smile led to a prolific media career, including hosting roles on Live! with Kelly and Michael and Good Morning America, as well as a suborbital space flight in 2021.
