From financial collapse to the top tier: the resilient rebirth of Pisa SC
In short: Few football clubs can claim to have been excluded from professional leagues twice due to debt. Yet, Pisa SC has navigated liquidations, re-foundings, and even a period of ownership by a German Shepherd to return to the summit of Italian football.
The history of Pisa Sporting Club is a cycle of remarkable sporting highs and devastating financial lows. Founded in 1909, the club experienced a golden era in the 1980s under chairman Romeo Anconetani, securing two Mitropa Cups in 1986 and 1988. During this period, the squad featured legendary talents such as Dunga and Paul Elliott. However, the club's stability has been frequently compromised by economic instability, leading to partial liquidations in 1994 and formal exclusion from Italian football in 2009 after failing to service mounting debts.
These crises forced the club to undergo several structural re-foundings, moving through the lower regional divisions like Eccellenza and Serie D. Each time, the club fought its way back up the Italian league pyramid. A particularly surreal chapter occurred in 2002, when the 'Gunther Reform Trust' took ownership, installing a German Shepherd named Gunther IV as honorary president. The dog was known to attend matches at the Arena Garibaldi, even prompting hostile banners from rivals in Livorno.
The modern era marks a significant resurgence. Following a 75% stake acquisition by billionaire Alexander Knaster in 2021, the club has focused on stability and growth. Led by manager Filippo Inzaghi, Pisa reached a landmark achievement, securing second place during the 2024–25 Serie B campaign. This promotion ended a 34-year absence from Serie A, completing a long journey from the brink of disappearance back to the top tier of the Italian game.
