From Bucharest to Athens: The Global Career of Romanian Midfielder Răzvan Marin
In short: Born in Bucharest and developed in the Viitorul Constanța academy, Răzvan Marin has navigated a decade of European football. From winning the Belgian Cup with Standard Liège to representing Romania at UEFA Euro 2024, the versatile midfielder has become a fixture in international competition, currently plying his trade in Greece.
Răzvan Gabriel Marin, born on 23 May 1996, began his professional journey at the age of 17 with Viitorul Constanța. His early development in Romania culminated in a move to Belgian side Standard Liège in January 2017. During his time in Belgium, Marin secured the Belgian Cup in his first full season and gained experience in both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. His consistent performances eventually drew the attention of Dutch giants Ajax, who signed him in 2019 for a reported fee of €12.5 million, marking one of the club's highest transfer expenditures at the time.
Following his stint in the Netherlands, Marin moved to Italy, joining Cagliari on loan in 2020 before the deal was made permanent for €10 million. His career in Serie A continued with a loan to Empoli in 2022, which was later redeemed for €5 million. Throughout these transitions, Marin maintained a significant presence on the international stage. He made his senior debut for Romania in October 2016, scoring in his first appearance against Armenia. His international career reached a high point during UEFA Euro 2024, where he played in every match as Romania advanced to the round of 16 as group winners.
Marin is recognized for his tactical flexibility, typically operating as a central or defensive midfielder, though he is capable of playing in more advanced attacking roles. His individual success has been marked by multiple accolades, including being named the Romanian Footballer of the Year at the 2018 Gala Fotbalului Românesc. He has also consistently placed in the top rankings for the prestigious Gazeta Sporturilor award, finishing as runner-up in 2018 and securing third place in both 2016 and 2024. As of July 2025, Marin continues his professional career with the Greek club AEK Athens.
