From humble beginnings with thirty shillings to the heights of the National League North
In short: Founded in 1949 with just over one pound in the bank, Radcliffe Football Club has navigated decades of amateur struggle and stadium relocations. Today, the club stands as a rising force in English football, recently securing a historic promotion that marks their return to the sixth tier of the pyramid.
Established on May 24, 1949, at the Owd Tower Inn, Radcliffe Football Club began with modest resources: a committee of 17, two players, and a bank balance of £1.12½p. Lacking a home ground, the founders initially leased a field on Ashworth Street. Over the following decades, the club moved several times, eventually settling at Stainton Park in 1969. The site required significant effort, including the relocation of wooden stands from their previous Bright Street location.
The club's journey through the English football system has been marked by periods of consolidation and dramatic shifts. After decades in regional leagues, the team experienced a notable upturn in the 1980s and 1990s. A significant milestone occurred in the 1996–97 season when they secured the Northern Premier League First Division title. Their history also includes a memorable 2003 season, during which Jody Banim set an English record by scoring in 14 consecutive matches, helping the team reach the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.
Recent years have brought a period of transformation under the leadership of chairman Paul Hilton, who took over in 2016. Substantial investments were made to modernize Stainton Park, adding facilities such as a new press area, TV gantry, and club shop. This off-field progress mirrored on-field success, culminating in the 2023–24 season. By winning the Northern Premier League Premier Division title, the club earned promotion to the National League North, returning to Step 2 of the national system after a two-decade absence.
Beyond the men's first team, the club has fostered a long-standing relationship with women's football. In 1994, the club hosted the Radcliffe Borough Ladies, and in 2023, the Radcliffe Women team was established at Stainton Park. These efforts underscore the club's role as a community hub, maintaining a legacy that spans over 75 years of local sporting history.
