The world's longest corridor is a drab, foreboding military hallway in the Falkland Islands.
In short: Spanning 2,600 feet, the Millennium Corridor connects barracks and mess halls at RAF Mount Pleasant. Originally dubbed the Death Star Corridor for its bleak atmosphere, this massive transit artery is just one feature of the newest purpose-built Royal Air Force station, a strategic hub located 33 miles from Stanley.
RAF Mount Pleasant, or MPA, was established to secure the Falkland Islands following the 1982 conflict. The British government opted to build this new facility rather than upgrade the existing, restricted runway at Port Stanley. Construction began in autumn 1983, and the station became fully operational on 1 May 1986, after being opened by Prince Andrew on 12 May 1985. The project required a significant investment, with costs reaching approximately £215 million, including the airfield, a connecting road to Stanley, and essential communication infrastructure.
The base serves as the primary hub for the British Forces South Atlantic Islands. It hosts a diverse range of military assets, including a roulement infantry company, the Sky Sabre air defence system, and a Joint Communications Unit. Air operations are managed by No. 905 Expeditionary Air Wing, which currently utilizes Eurofighter Typhoons for air defence and Airbus Voyager and A400M Atlas aircraft for transport and maritime patrol. The site also supports civilian needs, functioning as the territory's only international airport with twice-weekly commercial flights.
Life at the complex is designed to be self-contained, featuring a medical centre, education facilities, and the only cricket ground in the Falklands. The station’s layout reflects its strategic necessity, with the famous 2,600-foot corridor designed to keep personnel sheltered while moving between essential living and working quarters. While the base has evolved—replacing older aircraft like the Phantom and Tornado with modern variants—it remains a permanent fixture of British military presence in the South Atlantic, deterring aggression and maintaining a constant, watchful eye over the region.
