The equatorial peaks of Uganda that hide glaciers and rare alpine life
In short: Rising above the dry plains of the equator, the Rwenzori Mountains contain Africa's third, fourth, and fifth highest summits. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a landscape of ice-capped peaks, waterfalls, and five distinct vegetation zones, offering a unique high-altitude sanctuary for endangered species and endemic wildlife.
Established in 1991, the Rwenzori Mountains National Park covers nearly 1,000 square kilometres in south-western Uganda. The park sits along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, sharing a 50-kilometre boundary with the Virunga National Park. Its dramatic topography is defined by the Albertine Rift, with 70 percent of the park's total area situated at elevations exceeding 2,500 metres. This extreme verticality creates a rare environment where tropical latitudes support permanent glaciers and snowfields.
The park is home to significant geological and biological landmarks, including Mount Stanley, which features Margherita Peak—Africa's third highest point at 5,109 metres. Nearby, the range also hosts the continent's fourth and fifth tallest mountains. This elevation gradient supports five unique vegetation zones, contributing to a high level of botanical diversity that has earned the region international acclaim. The park serves as a critical habitat for various endemic and endangered species, including chimpanzees, forest elephants, and the Rwenzori turaco.
Despite its natural beauty, the park has faced significant challenges. Between 1997 and 2001, the area was occupied by rebel militias, leading to its inclusion on the List of World Heritage in Danger from 1999 to 2004 due to resource shortages and security concerns. Today, the park is managed by the Ugandan government and serves as a destination for hikers, who often utilize a seven-day circuit to explore its trail network. Accessible via the town of Kasese, the park remains a testament to the resilience of high-altitude ecosystems in equatorial Africa.
