The high-stakes drama behind a televised wedding and a ₹5 million rumor
In short: In 2010, a reality TV wedding captured India's attention, sparking intense debate over fame and finance. While some claimed the union was a paid publicity stunt worth ₹5 million, the truth behind the cameras revealed a much more turbulent personal reality for actress Sara Khan.
Sara Khan, born in Bhopal in 1989, rose to prominence through the Indian television industry, transitioning from a modeling career to becoming a recognizable face in Hindi serials. Her early success was marked by winning Miss Bhopal in 2007 and her breakout role as Sadhna in the Star Plus series Sapna Babul Ka... Bidaai, a role she held from 2007 until her departure in June 2010. Her professional journey also included guest appearances on shows like Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain?, where she participated in a game alongside Parul Chauhan to support Help Age India. Additionally, she appeared as a celebrity guest on Amul Star Voice of India 2 in September 2008.
However, it was her stint on the reality show Bigg Boss 4 that brought unprecedented scrutiny. During the show, Khan married actor Ali Merchant in an Islamic ceremony. The event triggered significant controversy when reports surfaced suggesting the couple had been paid ₹5 million (approximately US$52,000) for the marriage. While the television channel denied these payments, labeling the wedding a personal choice, Merchant later claimed on the show Sach Ka Saamuna that the marriage was a strategic move for publicity. Khan's time on the Bigg Boss set lasted 10 weeks, ending with her eviction on Day 69. She also competed as a wildcard in the dance competition Nach Baliye 6 alongside Paras Chhabra.
The union was short-lived; the pair divorced in 2011, only two months after the ceremony, an experience Khan later described as a nightmare. Beyond this high-profile drama, Khan has maintained a prolific career, appearing in various roles such as Maya in Sasural Simar Ka and Tanya Rastogi in Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein 2. In a more recent chapter, she married actor Krish Pathak in a Mumbai court ceremony on 6 October 2025. Her diverse television credits extend to roles in shows such as Junoon – Aisi Nafrat Toh Kaisa Ishq and Bhagyalaxmi. She also appeared in the music video Tere Jism in 2018.
