In short: Designed to redefine luxury cruising for adults, the Scarlet Lady faced a series of unprecedented delays. From a global pandemic to shifting geopolitical bans, the journey of Virgin Voyages' inaugural ship is a study in navigating a rapidly changing world.

Delivered by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri on 14 February 2020, the Scarlet Lady was originally scheduled to begin operations on 1 April 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced a significant postponement, delaying her official debut until 6 October 2021. This 18-month delay disrupted much of her initial itinerary, including planned pre-inaugural voyages to the Bahamas and cancelled preview events in New York City. The ship's construction was a massive undertaking, involving the assembly of 399 individual sections. This process began formally with the laying of the keel in late 2017.

The ship's operational plans have been shaped by both health crises and international politics. While the pandemic caused the primary delay, a 2019 US government ban on passengers entering Cuba via recreational vessels forced the line to swap Havana visits for stops in Key West. More recently, in July 2026, the vessel faced a different kind of blockade when, while chartered for a gay pride voyage, it was denied entry to the Turkish ports of Kuşadası and Istanbul, and subsequently to Egypt, due to local authorities citing 'moral values.' The vessel's fleetmates also share a connection to Jennifer Lopez, who was named the brand's chief entertainment and lifestyle officer in 2022. This makes the singer an informal godmother to the ship.

Despite these hurdles, the vessel remains a feat of modern engineering. Four Wärtsilä engines drive the diesel-electric genset on this 110,000 gross tonnage vessel, which utilises sophisticated scrubbers to lower nitrogen oxide and sulphur emissions. Designed as an 'adults-only' experience for those aged 18 and over, the ship avoids traditional buffets, instead offering approximately 20 distinct dining and drinking establishments, alongside unique amenities like an onboard tattoo parlor. The ship's design prioritizes views, with 93% of its cabins offering an outside perspective. Most of these, specifically 86%, are equipped with private balconies.
