From Columbus to Middlesbrough: the rise of American midfielder Sebastian Berhalter
In short: Born in London and raised in Ohio, Sebastian Berhalter has rapidly ascended through the ranks of professional soccer. From his professional debut with the Columbus Crew in 2020 to representing the United States on the world stage, his journey through Major League Soccer and the EFL Championship has been marked by steady growth and standout performances.
Sebastian Matthew Berhalter, born May 10, 2001, in London, England, has established himself as a prominent midfielder in professional soccer. Raised in Columbus, Ohio, his career began in the academies of Hammarby IF and the Columbus Crew. After playing college soccer for the North Carolina Tar Heels in 2019, he signed a homegrown player contract with the Columbus Crew on January 17, 2020.
His professional trajectory saw him move through several Major League Soccer clubs. Following a loan spell with Austin FC in 2021, Berhalter was traded to the Vancouver Whitecaps in early 2022 for $50,000 in general allocation money, plus an additional $50,000 if specific conditions were met. He became a vital component for the Whitecaps, earning selections to the MLS Best XI and the MLS All-Stars in 2025.
Berhalter's international career with the United States senior national team began in 2025, following his first call-up by coach Mauricio Pochettino. He has since been a member of the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad and was part of the team that finished as runner-up in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup. In July 2026, he transitioned to English football, joining EFL Championship club Middlesbrough on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
The midfielder's lineage is deeply rooted in the sport; he is the son of former United States men's national team coach Gregg Berhalter and Rosalind "Roz" Berhalter, a former University of North Carolina Tar Heels player who won four national championships. Through his mother, Berhalter is of Puerto Rican descent.
