From historic election victory to a 53-year prison threat
In short: Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick made history as the first Haitian-American Democrat elected to Congress. However, her rapid ascent was shadowed by a federal indictment alleging she laundered $5 million in COVID-19 relief funds to finance her own political ambitions, leading to a dramatic resignation just minutes before an expulsion vote.
Cherfilus-McCormick’s path to the House was marked by persistence. After losing two primary bids against incumbent Alcee Hastings in 2018 and 2020, she won a 2022 special election following his death. She secured her seat by a razor-thin margin of five votes in a primary recount, eventually becoming a prominent figure in the Congressional Black Caucus and serving on the Committees on Foreign Affairs and Veterans' Affairs.
Her political career took a sharp turn in late 2025. She was indicted on charges including theft, money laundering, and conspiring to file false tax returns. Accusations from the prosecution state that $5 million of federal relief funds were misappropriated and cleaned by her to finance a congressional campaign. This followed a January 2025 lawsuit by the state of Florida against her business, Trinity Health Care Services, for allegedly accepting overpayments for work never performed during the pandemic.
The House Ethics Committee investigation was swift and severe. In March 2026, the bipartisan committee found her guilty on 25 out of 27 charges, citing violations of the Ethics in Government Act and various House rules. Facing a potential 53-year prison sentence and a looming expulsion vote, she resigned on April 21, 2026, just minutes before the hearing was set to begin. Despite her resignation, she remained on the ballot for the 2026 primary, where she ultimately finished fourth with 9.2% of the vote.
