At the edge of the Earth, where the sea turns to ice
In short: In the far reaches of Hokkaido, the Shiretoko Peninsula marks a rare biological frontier. It is the southernmost point in the Northern Hemisphere where sea ice regularly forms, creating a unique, frozen ecosystem that draws some of the world's most endangered whales to its shores.
Derived from the Ainu term 'sir etok', meaning 'the end of the Earth,' the Shiretoko Peninsula extends 70 kilometres into the Sea of Okhotsk. This rugged landscape is defined by the Chishima volcanic zone, featuring a chain of volcanoes including Mount Shiretoko, Mount Unabetsu, and Mount Iō. The peninsula's geography is shaped by powerful currents: the cold Oyashio Current flows along the east, while the Soya Current brings seasonal sea ice to the western coast, reaching a latitude of 43 degrees north.
This intersection of currents creates a highly productive marine environment. The area serves as a critical habitat for numerous cetaceans, including orcas, sperm whales, and the incredibly rare North Pacific right whale, which has been sighted near the shore in 2013, 2018, and 2019. The waters are also a site of historical significance for whale species; while blue whales were once landed at nearby Abashiri port, they are now considered nearly extinct in Japanese waters.
The peninsula's terrestrial ecosystem is equally complex, ranging from Siberian dwarf pines above 1,000 metres to dense forests of mizunara oak. It is home to Ussuri brown bears, sika deer, and red foxes. To preserve this biodiversity, much of the area was designated as Shiretoko National Park in 1964 and later recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. However, the environment remains volatile; the strong subarctic currents make navigation difficult, a reality underscored by a tragic 2022 boat sinking near Kashuni Falls.
