A colonial mansion in Macau that became a sanctuary and a public library
In short: Tucked away in the historic heart of Macau lies a grand residence that once served as a wartime refuge for a prominent businessman. Today, this architectural gem functions as the largest public library in the region, blending colonial heritage with modern expansion to serve the local community and preserve cultural history.
The Sir Robert Ho Tung Library occupies a distinguished mansion situated within the Historic Centre of Macau, an area recognized globally for its cultural significance. Originally built prior to 1894, the property was first owned by Dona Carolina Cunha. Its transformation into a public institution began with the Hong Kong entrepreneur Sir Robert Ho Tung, who acquired the estate in 1918 to use as a personal getaway.
The mansion gained historical prominence during the mid-twentieth century. Between 1941 and 1945, Sir Robert Ho Tung resided in the home to escape the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. His choice of location was strategic; because Macau was a Portuguese territory, it maintained neutrality during the conflict, a status respected by the Japanese forces. This period of residence cemented the building's role as a place of safety during a turbulent era in regional history.
Following the death of Sir Robert Ho Tung in 1955, the mansion was bequeathed to the government to be repurposed as a public library, fulfilling the terms of his will. The facility officially opened its doors to the public in 1958. While the original structure remains the heart of the site, housing the library system's headquarters and the Macao ISBN Agency, the institution underwent a significant expansion in 2005. The addition of a new building near the rear garden solidified its status as the largest public library in Macau, successfully bridging the gap between its colonial past and its contemporary function as a vital center for learning and research.
