The Roof of Africa: How Volcanic Erosion Created a Sanctuary for Rare Wildlife
In short: Rising from the Ethiopian highlands, the Simien Mountains are a jagged masterpiece of volcanic history. This UNESCO World Heritage site protects endemic species found nowhere else on Earth, yet it remains a complex landscape where the survival of rare wildlife is deeply intertwined with the lives of local residents.
Formed roughly 30 million years ago during the Paleogene period, the Simien Massif is the remnant of a massive shield volcano. Over millions of years, relentless erosion carved the Ethiopian plateau into a dramatic landscape of serrated peaks, deep valleys, and sheer cliffs reaching 1,500 metres in height. This rugged terrain serves as a vital catchment basin, with the Mayshasha River sustaining a diverse ecosystem that ranges from montane forests to afroalpine meadows.
The park is a critical refuge for biodiversity, hosting 21 large mammal species and hundreds of birds. Among its most famous inhabitants are the walia ibex, a wild goat unique to the region, and the Ethiopian wolf. The park also supports the gelada baboon and the bearded vulture, a bird with a wingspan reaching 3 metres. Recent research remains active; a 2015 expedition identified 11 rodent species and two shrew species endemic to the plateau, with potential for even more discoveries.
Established in 1969, the park was among the first sites inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. It faced significant challenges, including population declines of native species, which led to its inclusion on the List of World Heritage in Danger from 1996 until 2017. Today, management focuses on balancing conservation with the needs of local communities. This effort is complex; while initiatives aim to reduce pressure on natural resources through livestock management and education, some resettlement policies have drawn criticism as a form of green colonialism, highlighting the tension between eco-tourism economies and traditional land use.
