Simulating the violent tremors of a journey to Mercury

BepiColombo horizontal vibration test · 3:03 · Video: European Space Agency, ESA · Watch at the source

In short: Before BepiColombo can reach the solar system's innermost planet, it must survive the brutal mechanical stress of launch. This video captures the spacecraft's structural model undergoing rigorous vibration testing to ensure it can withstand the journey.

Engineers at ESA's ESTEC center in the Netherlands subjected a structural and thermal model of BepiColombo to a 2.5-minute horizontal-axis vibration test. The test utilized frequencies ranging from 3 Hz to 100 Hz to replicate the intense conditions of an Ariane 5 launch vehicle.

The stack being tested stands about six metres high and includes the Mercury Planetary Orbiter, the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (hidden by a sunshield), and the Mercury Transfer Module. These components are designed to work in tandem to deliver scientific data from Mercury's orbit.
