Growing human organs in orbit to cure diseases on Earth
In short: Space is becoming a high-tech laboratory for regenerative medicine. By leveraging microgravity, scientists are currently growing 3D heart tissues and brain models aboard the International Space Station to develop treatments for conditions that are nearly impossible to study under the constant pull of Earth's gravity.
The latest cargo delivery to the International Space Station (ISS) highlights a shift toward complex biological engineering. Among the 6,300 pounds of supplies delivered by SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft are specialized materials for creating artificial retinas and growing heart tissue models in weightlessness. These experiments aim to bypass the limitations of terrestrial biology, where gravity can distort the growth of delicate human structures.
Brain organoids represent highly complex initiatives, consisting of miniature three-dimensional cellular structures that mimic neural tissue. Because these miniature models allow researchers to observe biological processes that are difficult to study directly in humans, they serve as a frontier for identifying targets to treat neurological conditions like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis. Additionally, the station is being used to grow protein crystals intended to develop more precise cancer treatments.
Beyond medicine, the ISS serves as a foundry for new materials and life support systems. To enhance upcoming spacecraft life support systems, experts are monitoring plant genetic reactions while examining microgravity glass formation. To power these intensive operations, the station is receiving its final upgraded Roll-Out Solar Arrays (IROSAs), which will be installed via spacewalks scheduled for late October and early November.
The infrastructure supporting this science is also expanding. NASA recently unveiled the Permanent Multi-Purpose Module (PMM), a new hardware addition to the ISS designed specifically for numerous microgravity experiments once it is unloaded of spare parts and supplies.
