In short: The International Space Station is more than a laboratory; it is a national asset. To maximize its potential, NASA is handing over the management of its U.S. national laboratory components to a new independent organization, ensuring that a broader range of scientists and industries can access the unique environment of orbit.

To manage the United States' segments of the International Space Station, a joint venture was established involving CASIS and NASA. national laboratory. Operating from Florida's Kennedy Space Center within the Space Life Sciences Laboratory, CASIS functions as a research management entity without profit motives. The organisation aims to open the station's distinct features to a wide variety of American groups, transcending typical government boundaries. These include the industrial, technological, and scientific sectors.

This shift in management reflects the logistical complexity of modern orbital science. The station currently hosts hundreds of experiments simultaneously, many of which require significant astronaut attention. To mitigate the constraints on crew time, NASA is increasingly deploying automated systems like Redwire’s ADvanced Space Experiment Processors (ADSEPs). These mini-laboratories allow for more research to be conducted with less human intervention, enabling the station to function as a high-throughput workspace while astronauts focus on complex tasks.

The research conducted under this framework is aimed at both immediate terrestrial benefits and long-term exploration. Current projects include the InSPA-StemCellEX-H2 investigation, which seeks to manufacture large quantities of blood stem cells for cancer and disease treatments on Earth. Simultaneously, missions like SpaceX Crew-13 are dedicated to studying human health—specifically blood flow and clotting—to lay the groundwork for future human travel to the Moon and Mars. This transition to CASIS management ensures that these critical advancements remain accessible to the wider private and academic sectors.
