Red dwarfs might be our best bet for finding life

Scientists Discover Planets More Habitable Than Earth · 12:41 · Video: Destiny · Watch at the source

In short: We used to have zero proof of planets outside our solar system. Now, we have identified over 5,300 exoplanets. While finding an Earth twin is difficult, new discoveries suggest that smaller, cooler stars might actually be the most promising places to find habitable worlds.

The search for habitable worlds has evolved rapidly from identifying large gas giants to locating smaller, rocky planets. More than 50 exoplanets possessing Earth-like masses have been detected by astronomers, alongside upwards of 800 bodies measuring under half our planet's radius. However, finding those that reside in the 'habitable zone'—the specific distance from a star where temperatures allow for liquid water—remains a primary scientific hurdle.

One of the most promising leads involves red dwarfs. Because these stars are smaller and cooler than our Sun, their habitable zones are much closer to the stellar surface. This allows planets to orbit in much tighter configurations while still maintaining temperatures suitable for water. For example, the recently discovered super-Earth TOI-715 b orbits a red dwarf just 137 light-years away. Measuring roughly 1.5 times Earth's diameter, this world resides in the 'conservative' habitable zone, which offers a stricter criteria for life than the 'optimistic' region.

These compact orbits offer a significant observational advantage. Because the planets are closer to their stars, they cross the face of the star more frequently. TOI-715 b completes a 'year' every 19 days, making it easier for instruments like the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) to detect and study. Moving forward, tools like the James Webb Space Telescope will be used to analyze the atmospheric composition of these worlds, seeking the chemical signatures that might indicate the presence of life.
