A 20-year odyssey to the Jovian system and beyond
In short: China is planning a massive leap into the outer solar system. The Tianwen-4 mission aims to reach Jupiter by 2035, potentially landing on its moon Callisto before sending a secondary probe on a lonely trek to Uranus in the late 2040s.
The Tianwen-4 mission, originally known as Gan De, represents China's transition from lunar exploration to ambitious interplanetary goals. Following the success of the Chang'e program, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) announced plans in 2018 to conduct four major interplanetary missions by the end of the 2020s. Tianwen-4 is the centerpiece of these ambitions, specifically targeting the Jovian system.
The mission architecture currently weighs between two primary profiles: the Jupiter Callisto Orbiter (JCO) and the Jupiter Saturn Orbiter (JSO). Reports from 2023 and 2024 suggest JCO is the favored path. This profile involves a complex trajectory: a launch in September 2029, a Venus fly-by in April 2030, and two Earth encounters before reaching Jupiter in December 2035. The spacecraft will then perform gravity assists to enter a polar orbit around Callisto by February 2038.
Callisto is a prime target because it is the least challenging Jovian moon to land on, sitting outside Jupiter's intense radiation field and requiring less fuel to reach. Because it has remained mostly dormant since its formation, it preserves a pristine history of the early Solar System. Alternatively, the JSO profile would focus on the volcanic activity of Io or even a stay at the Sun–Jupiter L1 point—a location where no spacecraft has ever visited—to monitor solar winds.
