In short: What began in 2000 as a small gaming clan founded by Victor Goossens has transformed into a multi-regional empire. Today, Team Liquid manages elite rosters across dozens of titles, from League of Legends to chess, backed by some of the most prominent names in professional sports.

The organization's origins are rooted in the StarCraft community. Founded by Victor "Nazgul" Goossens, the clan initially consisted of just four members before growing to eight. The launch of StarCraft II catalyzed its evolution into a professional entity, supported by sponsorships that allowed the team to pay player salaries and fund international travel.

Team Liquid's expansion into multi-genre management accelerated in 2012 with the acquisition of a North American Dota 2 team. This diversification continued through a significant 2015 merger with Team Curse, which brought in Steve Arhancet and expanded their reach into League of Legends, Street Fighter, and Super Smash Bros. This strategic growth was further solidified in 2016 when the organization sold a controlling interest to aXiomatic Gaming, an investment group featuring high-profile figures like Magic Johnson, Tony Robbins, and Steve Case.

Today, the organization is a massive multi-regional operation. Their influence spans from competitive gaming to traditional intellectual pursuits, representing chess grandmasters like Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana. Their competitive portfolio is vast, including teams in Counter-Strike, Rainbow Six Siege, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang across Indonesia and the Philippines. In 2024, they expanded further by joining the Esports World Cup Foundation Club Support Program and acquiring rosters in the Mobile Legends scene through the acquisition of STUN.GG.

The organization's legacy is also tied to its digital footprint. The website, established in 2001, grew into the largest StarCraft community on the internet, boasting over 220,000 active members and more than 24 million posts.
