The elusive Triple Crown: a wrestling achievement defined by three distinct titles
In short: In professional wrestling, winning a championship is the goal, but winning three specific titles is the ultimate distinction. Known as the Triple Crown, this accolade varies by promotion, requiring wrestlers to capture a world title, a secondary singles title, and a tag team championship to cement their legacy.
The Triple Crown is not a universal standard but a distinction tailored to the specific hierarchy of various wrestling promotions. To become a Triple Crown Champion in the WWE, a wrestler must secure the WWE Championship, the Intercontinental Championship, and the first World Tag Team Championship. Between 1979 and 1997, spanning almost 18 years, these three belts represented the company's entire title collection. While nine men, including John Cena and Shawn Michaels, have won all five eligible championships, the company does not recognize the Universal Championship or the SmackDown Tag Team Championship as substitutes for the Triple Crown.
Different organizations have developed unique variations of this feat. New Japan Pro-Wrestling offers a unique version consisting of three singles championships rather than including a tag team title. In contrast, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) established a men's Triple Crown on September 4, 2022, requiring the AEW World, World Tag Team, and World Trios Championships. AEW's women's version, established on July 26, 2026, utilizes the AEW Women's World, TBS, and Women's World Tag Team Championships.
The speed at which these accolades are achieved varies wildly. In the TNA era, Kurt Angle completed the circuit in just 92 days between May and August 2007, becoming the only wrestler to hold all required titles simultaneously. Conversely, Ring of Honor (ROH) saw Samoa Joe take 6,962 days—roughly 19 years—to complete his Triple Crown, having won his first title in March 2003 and his final required title in April 2022. These vast differences highlight the difficulty of navigating a promotion's specific championship landscape.
