In short: Founded in 1988 as a residential developer, the Dalian Wanda Group has aggressively pivoted away from the slowing Chinese property market. Through massive international acquisitions, the conglomerate has transformed into a diversified titan spanning cinema, luxury yachts, and major global sporting rights.

The transformation of Dalian Wanda Group began in earnest around 2005. To mitigate risks associated with the fluctuating Chinese property market, the conglomerate pursued 'alternative, income-generating businesses.' This strategy led to a series of high-profile global acquisitions, including the $2.6 billion purchase of AMC Theatres in 2012, which made Wanda Cinemas the world's largest cinema operator.

Wanda's reach extends far beyond the silver screen. The group has invested heavily in the sports sector to amplify its global visibility and influence. Notable moves include the $1.2 billion acquisition of Swiss sports marketing firm Infront Sports & Media in February 2015, which secured rights to broadcast FIFA events through 2022. They also acquired the American sports promotion company World Triathlon Corporation for $650 million in August 2015.

The group's ambition even reached the football pitch. In early 2015, founder Wang Jianlin orchestrated the purchase of a 20 percent stake in the La Liga club Atlético Madrid for approximately €44.98 million. While the group has faced challenges—such as a failed $1 billion bid for Dick Clark Productions in 2016 due to regulatory and financial pressures—it remains a massive force in international entertainment and sports.

By 2017, the company's scale was immense, boasting annual revenues of 227.4 billion yuan ($35.29 billion) and assets totaling 700 billion yuan. Its cultural division, encompassing film and sports, contributed roughly $10.85 billion to that total revenue.
