The gendered warrior who cannot contain the infection

In short: In the kingdom of Hallownest, most vessels are born empty and genderless to contain a plague. But Hornet is different. Born from a royal pact, this agile warrior possesses a mind and a voice—qualities that make her a protector, but also a liability to the kingdom's survival.

Hornet is a central figure in the lore of Team Cherry's Hollow Knight (2017). Unlike the genderless, empty vessels designed to contain the mind-controlling Infection, Hornet is known as 'the Gendered Child.' She was born from a deal between the Pale King, the wyrm king of Hallownest, and the weaver Herrah the Beast. Through this agreement, Herrah could conceive, provided she became a 'Dreamer'—one of three entities entering everlasting slumber to trap the Hollow Knight and restrain the plague.

Raised in Deepnest and trained by the late Hive Queen Vespa, Hornet survived the fall of Hallownest and remained sane, unaffected by the Infection. In the original game, she acts as a protector and tester, challenging escaped vessels to see if they are worthy of replacing the Hollow Knight. Her combat style is described by co-director Ari Gibson as agile, quick, and deadly, a trait that significantly influenced the complexity of enemy design in the sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong (2025).

The character's evolution from a rival to a protagonist is a major narrative shift. While some critics noted a lack of player-driven change in her journey, others praised her development from a cold-blooded warrior to an empathetic survivor. In Silksong, Hornet is the playable protagonist, kidnapped and taken to the kingdom of Pharloom. Her height and increased skill level were primary reasons the project expanded from a DLC into a full standalone sequel.
