A high-tech heist where the guests are the only ones with keys
In short: In the Collector's fortress, the galaxy's most wanted heroes are trapped in electrified display cases. To break them out, you aren't just a spectator; you are the literal key. By scanning your biological signs, you provide the clearance needed to hijack a high-speed gantry lift and sabotage the entire facility.
Opened on May 27, 2017, at Disney California Adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout! serves as a premium narrative experience based on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it shares the infrastructure of the former Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, it exists in a separate shared universe alongside Avengers Campus attractions. The ride is physically integrated into the campus via ground markings inspired by Jack Kirby’s 'Kirby Krackle,' designed to simulate cosmic energy transporting the fortress from across the galaxy.
The narrative centers on Taneleer Tivan, known as The Collector, who keeps his latest acquisitions—the Guardians—suspended over an abyss. The experience utilizes a sophisticated mix of live actors (including Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldaña), Audio-Animatronics, and CGI. Visitors explore a repository containing various items, such as a The Haunted Mansion ghost dog maquette and the Matterhorn Bobsleds' authentic abominable snowman from Disneyland. A key narrative beat involves the character Rocket hijacking the ride's audio system to play a curated playlist of 1970s and 80s hits while the lift undergoes various drop sequences.
The ride features three gantry lifts and a single shaftway, allowing for continuous operation. During the 'breakout,' the lift accelerates and drops six times, each synced to specific visual scenarios and songs ranging from Elvis Presley to The Jackson 5. These sequences depict the Guardians fighting off tentacled monsters, security drones, and gargoyle-like creatures. The experience concludes with the team reuniting with Mantis for a getaway, leaving guests to hear the Collector's frustrated intercom messages and Howard the Duck's mocking farewells.
