The cosmic sibling rivalry between desire and death
In short: In Marvel lore, the villain Thanos is often viewed as a solitary monster. However, his nihilistic obsession with death was born from a complex, semi-Freudian dynamic with his brother, Eros—better known as Starfox. Together, they embody the ancient philosophical tension between the drive for pleasure and the inevitability of the end.
Created by Jim Starlin in 1973, Eros and Thanos were designed as conceptual opposites. While Thanos represents Thanatos (death), Eros represents Eros (desire). This duality is central to their history: Eros is a fun-loving, hedonistic adventurer, while Thanos is a power-hungry conqueror. Despite their differences, they are bound by a biological and cultural mandate. Every 1,000 Earth years, the brothers observe 'The Truce,' a custom established by their father, Mentor, to meet at a neutral location and exchange gifts as a reminder of their shared bloodline.
The relationship is defined by psychological manipulation. Thanos famously attempted to frame Eros for inspiring his obsession with death by implanting a false memory into Eros's mind. This manipulation caused Eros to briefly lose mental balance and use his powers—the ability to stimulate the pleasure centers of the brain—to influence others. This power has led to significant legal and moral complications, including a high-profile trial where Eros was accused of using his abilities to seduce a married woman, eventually leading to a physical confrontation with the She-Hulk.
Eros's narrative often balances personal hedonism with cosmic responsibility. Though he frequently seeks out pleasure and romance on humanoid worlds, he has repeatedly intervened in major crises, such as the Terminus crisis and the battle against Ultron. His journey reflects a struggle to maintain individual agency while navigating a destiny tied to a brother who seeks to unravel reality. Whether he is serving as an Avenger or wandering the stars, Starfox remains a study in how the pursuit of desire can coexist with the weight of cosmic duty.
The character's evolution has been significant, moving from a carefree womanizer on the moon Titan to a complex figure who has navigated time travel, legal battles, and the burden of his brother's legacy. His role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portrayed by Harry Styles in 2021, further cemented his status as a pivotal figure in the Eternals mythos.
