The legal battle over a name and the ghost of an airbase
In short: A court ruling once tried to stop an airport from using a famous city's name. While it remains a hub for low-cost travel today, its foundations are rooted in military history, specifically as a former British Royal Air Force base.
Weeze Airport, officially known as Flughafen Niederrhein, serves as a minor international gateway in Germany's Lower Rhine region. While it is currently synonymous with the low-cost carrier Ryanair, its physical infrastructure is built upon the site of the former military airbase RAF Laarbruch. This transition from a strategic military installation to a civilian hub occurred in 2003, marking a significant shift in the land's utility.
The airport has faced unique identity challenges since opening. Operators initially sought to market it as 'Düsseldorf-Weeze,' but this sparked a legal conflict. In 2016, a court ruled that using the name of Düsseldorf was likely to mislead passengers because the airport is actually 83 km (52 mi) away from the city—a distance significant enough that the airport is technically closer to several Dutch cities like Nijmegen and Arnhem than to its namesake.
The facility's commercial journey has been volatile. After a period of rapid growth between 2008 and 2013, it peaked at nearly three million passengers in 2010 before facing a sharp decline due to competition from nearby airports like Eindhoven and Dortmund. A major crisis hit in 2019 when passenger numbers fell by 30 percent following the cancellation of key routes, including its most popular destination, London-Stansted.
Despite these fluctuations, the airport has shown resilience. Following a collapse during the COVID-19 pandemic, it saw a resurgence in popularity. Exceeding two million travellers in 2025 marked a milestone for Weeze Airport, which hasn't seen such figures since before the last ten years, securing its status as a key Lower Rhine transit hub.
