In short: What happens when a birth error forces two families to keep the children they raised? In the manga series A Couple of Cuckoos, a medical mistake leads to a complex domestic arrangement where parents choose to maintain the status quo, forcing two teenagers into a shared life to satisfy their own emotional needs.

The narrative centers on Nagi Umino and Erika Amano, two teenagers who discover they were swapped at birth. While the biological truth is revealed, the parents involved make a calculated, albeit selfish, decision: they refuse to give up the children they raised. Instead, they arrange for Nagi and Erika to live together in a house owned by Erika's family. This arrangement is designed to ensure the two fall in love before graduation, effectively allowing the parents to avoid the emotional toll of saying goodbye to the children they have already raised.

The series explores the intersection of personal identity and social pressure. Erika, a popular Instagram celebrity, initially seeks out Nagi to help her escape an arranged marriage, unaware that her own parents have already orchestrated an engagement between her and Nagi. This irony highlights a recurring theme of orchestrated destinies. Nagi, meanwhile, navigates a complicated romantic landscape involving his classmate Hiro Segawa, his feelings for Erika, and his interactions with various childhood friends and classmates who harbor their own complex feelings for him.

Beyond the central romance, the series gained significant industry traction. Published in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine starting in January 2020, it was the first manga series where Miki Yoshikawa utilized digital drawing. Securing a twelfth-place spot on Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi!, the title earned significant acclaim. The debut book vanished from shelves rapidly because of intense interest, appearing on the 2021 list of top manga for men. It has since expanded into multiple anime seasons, including a second season airing in late 2025.

The story serves as a study of 'chosen' family versus biological reality. By keeping the children they raised, the parents prioritize their own comfort over the teenagers' right to their biological heritage. This creates a pressurized environment where Nagi and Erika must navigate a life that is simultaneously a consequence of a mistake and a deliberate construction by the adults in their lives.
