In short: The Montana State Bobcats have achieved a rare feat in American college football: winning national titles across the NAIA, NCAA Division II, and NCAA Division I FCS. This program, which began in 1897, has navigated shifting conference landscapes and wartime tragedy to become a consistent force in the Big Sky Conference.

The program's history is marked by resilience and evolution. Following World War II, the 1946 team emerged with a solemn mission, playing in honor of 14 members of the 1941 squad who were killed during the conflict. This era preceded a golden age of success that saw the Bobcats secure their first national championship in 1956, sharing the NAIA title after a scoreless tie against St. Joseph's College. This victory was a milestone for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, marking its first national football champion.

Montana State's trophy case expanded significantly in the following decades. Under head coach Sonny Holland, the team captured the 1976 NCAA Division II championship by defeating the Akron Zips 24–13. Eight years later, in 1984, the program secured its third national title in the Division I-AA category with a 19–6 win over Louisiana Tech. Most recently, the Bobcats claimed the 2025 FCS championship under head coach Brent Vigen, cementing their unique status as the only program to win national championships at three distinct levels of competition.

Beyond national titles, the program is defined by its intense rivalry with the Montana Grizzlies, known as the Brawl of the Wild. The series has evolved through three distinct periods, with the Bobcats enjoying a dominant stretch between 1963 and 1985. The rivalry remains a cornerstone of the university's culture, highlighted by legendary moments like the 2018 comeback victory, dubbed The Montana Stuff. Today, the Bobcats continue to compete at a high level, maintaining a legacy built on decades of conference titles and postseason appearances.
