In short: In the light novel series Okaa-san Online, a teenager and his doting mother are transported into an online game. While the premise sounds absurd, the game's original design was intended to foster deeper connections between parents and their offspring.

Pochi Iida provides the illustrations for this series, which features the adventures of Mamako and her son, Masato Oosuki, alongside author Dachima Inaka. When they are teleported into a fantasy-themed online game, Masato finds himself frequently overshadowed by his mother's overwhelming power. Armed with two extremely powerful swords, Mamako possesses much higher stats than her son, often defeating opponents before he can even act. The series, also known as Okaa-san Online, was published by Fujimi Shobo between January 2017 and April 2020. This run spanned eleven volumes in total.

The narrative explores complex family dynamics through various characters. For instance, the mage Wise struggles with a mother, Genya, who abandoned her after discovering her own superior strength. Similarly, the character Medhi deals with an overbearing mother, Medhimama, whose intense pressure to succeed leads Medhi to despise her. These storylines offer a glimpse into the nuances of managing the bond between a parent and a teenager seeking independence. The character Kazuno, known as the Empress of the Night, serves as the first boss and uses magic to maintain her youthful appearance. Meanwhile, the group includes Porta, a skilled craftsman, and the distributor Shirase, who is often found dead in coffins.

Beyond the fantasy combat, the franchise has expanded into unexpected territories. To assist junior high pupils with English speaking and grammar, a joint educational volume called 'Let's Study English with Your Mom' debuted in March 2020. While critics like Steve Jones of Anime News Network have described the anime adaptation as an 'odd beast' that relies on fan service, others have noted its ability to address real-life issues, such as abusive parent-child relationships. The anime adaptation by J.C.Staff aired throughout the summer of 2019. It featured the voice of Ai Kayano, who also hosted a web radio show starting in June 2019.
