The software engineer who built a fictional tribe's language
In short: Madhan Karky didn't just write dialogue for India's biggest blockbusters; he engineered an entire linguistic system from scratch. Using his background in computer science and linguistics, he created 'Kiliki,' a constructed language featuring unique grammar rules and phonetic reversals to give a fictional tribe a distinct cultural identity.
Madhan Karky’s transition from academia to cinema is rooted in high-level technical research. Having earned a PhD in computer science at the University of Queensland, Karky started his professional life teaching as an assistant professor within Guindy's College of Engineering. His early work involved complex systems like a Java-based simulation platform for wireless sensor networks and projects involving Natural Language Processing (NLP), such as creating a Tamil spell checker based on a morphological analyzer.
This technical foundation directly informs his cinematic contributions. While collaborating with director S.S. Rajamouli on the 'Baahubali' series, Karky was tasked with creating a language for the Kalakeya tribe that sounded fear-inducing. Drawing on a hobby of inventing languages with children while babysitting in Australia—where he created a language called 'Click'—he developed 'Kiliki.' This constructed language includes approximately 750 words and 40 grammar rules, utilizing verbal clicks as tense markers and phonetic reversals for opposites (e.g., 'min' for "I" and 'nim' for "you"). Notably, the language lacks words for remorse to reflect the characters' personalities.
Beyond fiction, Karky applies these principles to literacy and technology through his non-profit, the Karky Research Foundation (KaReFo). Founded in 2013 with his wife Nandini, the organization develops tools like 'Piripori,' a morphological analyzer for Tamil, and 'Paeri,' which generates roughly 9 crore names based on Indian phonetics. His work bridges the gap between computational linguistics and cultural preservation, aiming to propagate language literacy through educational games and digital tools.
