Born in 1957, Praful Patel entered politics following the legacy of his father, Manoharbhai Patel. After serving as the president of the Gondia Municipal Council in 1985, he ascended to national prominence, holding various parliamentary committee roles and serving as the Minister of Civil Aviation from 2004 to 2011. During his tenure, he oversaw policy shifts such as increasing the foreign direct investment cap in domestic airlines. His ministerial work also extended to heavy industries, where he launched the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan in 2013 and initiated large-scale solar power projects.

Patel's influence in sports administration was equally significant. As president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) from 2009 to 2022, he sought to modernize the sport by introducing the Indian Super League and establishing a women's football league. His international reach grew through roles in the Asian Football Confederation and FIFA committees. Under his leadership, India hosted major events like the AFC U-16 Championship and the FIFA U-17 World Cup, while the AIFF received recognition as the AFC Developing Member Association of the Year in 2016.

However, his tenure ended in controversy. After his third term expired in December 2020, Patel remained in office, eventually leading to his removal by the Supreme Court and the appointment of a Committee of Administrators. This transition triggered a brief FIFA suspension of the AIFF in August 2022 due to third-party interference. Accusations surfaced that Patel had orchestrated the suspension to regain his position, though the crisis was resolved after the Supreme Court restored day-to-day management to the federation. Today, Patel continues to hold various leadership roles in educational and social organizations.
