In short: We often categorize buildings by their style, but this concept is a relatively modern invention. Before the 18th century, architects viewed their work as timeless truths rather than historical trends. Today, style serves as a vital historical tool, helping us organize the evolution of human construction across time and geography.

An architectural style is a classification system that groups buildings based on shared traits, such as construction methods, materials, form, and regional character. While we now use these labels to navigate history, the concept was largely foreign to architects before the 18th century. Previously, architectural form was considered a divine revelation or a reflection of natural laws, rather than a product of a specific historical epoch.

The 19th century saw scholars formalize the study of style, particularly within German-speaking art history. Figures like Heinrich Wölfflin and Alois Riegl sought to organize architecture into grand, chronological schemes. This approach, often called formalism, treated buildings as part of a continuous development of forms, sometimes prioritizing the evolution of the structure over the identity of the individual architect. By the mid-20th century, however, this heavy reliance on style began to face criticism, with some arguing it obscured the deeper ideas and social contexts behind a building's design.

Despite these debates, style remains an indispensable tool for historians. It allows us to track how ideas spread—such as the Renaissance moving from Italy across Europe—and how they are adapted or revived, like the evolution of Spanish mission architecture. In the 21st century, the definition continues to shift; contemporary architecture is often defined by its reliance on computer-aided design, such as Parametricism, proving that the way we categorize our built environment is as fluid as the history it records.
