Why embrace a villainous fate instead of seeking a happy ending?
In short: Most reincarnation stories focus on avoiding tragedy. But for Alicia Williams, the goal isn't to escape her dark destiny. Instead, she aims to refine her role as a high-born antagonist, training ruthlessly to become the most unforgettable and competent villainess in history.
The Japanese series, originally titled 'Rekishi ni Nokoru Akujo ni Naru zo', began its journey as a web novel on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō platform in December 2018. Written by Izumi Okido and illustrated by Jyun Hayase, the story follows a young woman reincarnated into the world of her favorite otome dating simulation. Unlike typical protagonists who strive for virtue, the protagonist, Alicia Williams, embraces her role as the primary villainess. The narrative's foundation lies in the user-generated content era of digital publishing. This specific web novel journey began on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō site.
Alicia's motivation stems from a disdain for the original game's 'goody-two-shoes' heroine, Liz. Rather than attempting to rewrite her fate to avoid a bad ending, Alicia seeks to maximize her impact, training to become a brilliant and legendary figure. Her journey shifts significantly after the monarch employs her to unsettle Liz, introducing new social and political tensions to her descent into villainy. The protagonist's path is complicated by the presence of characters like Albert, Alan, and Henry Williams. She must also navigate the influence of the Prince, who finds himself enamored by her villainous persona.
The franchise has seen significant commercial expansion since its inception. After being acquired by Enterbrain, it was published as a light novel under the B's Log Bunko imprint starting in August 2019. The series gained massive popularity, with over 850,000 copies in circulation by August 2023. This success led to a manga adaptation by Akari Hoshi in May 2020 and an anime television series produced by Maho Film, which aired between October and December 2024. The anime adaptation, directed by Yūji Yanase, featured music by Moe Hyūga. It concluded its broadcast run on December 25, 2024, after debuting on Tokyo MX.
