The Houston Texans' season of historic firsts and frustrating fades
In short: The 2024 Houston Texans campaign was a study in extremes: record-breaking starts, franchise milestones, and dramatic collapses. From debuting new uniforms to securing back-to-back playoff berths, the team navigated a volatile year defined by offensive inconsistency and high-stakes postseason drama.
The 2024 season marked several significant milestones for the Houston Texans franchise. It was only their second year under head coach DeMeco Ryans and the first season with Cal McNair as the sole principal owner. Marking a shift in branding, the squad unveiled updated kits for the initial time since the group's founding.
The team experienced high-water marks early on, achieving a 5–1 start—their best opening since 2012. This run included their first 2–0 start since 2016 and a victory in Foxborough that marked the franchise's first win in New England history. However, momentum proved fickle; despite building a 23–7 halftime lead against the Detroit Lions, they suffered a late-game collapse, losing on a walk-off field goal.
Injuries and offensive struggles hampered their consistency throughout the year. Key receivers Nico Collins, Stefon Diggs, and Tank Dell all faced significant injuries, including Dell's season-ending broken leg in Week 13. Despite these hurdles, the Texans successfully defended their AFC South title, clinching a second consecutive playoff appearance after sweeping the Indianapolis Colts.
In the postseason, the Texans demonstrated dominance over the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card Round, where they forced four interceptions from Justin Herbert. However, their road struggles persisted in the Divisional Round against the Kansas City Chiefs. The team remains winless in the Divisional Round (0–6), with all six losses occurring on the road.
