Why this Chinese mountain range is the ultimate sanctuary for the giant panda
In short: Spanning over 9,000 square kilometers, the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries serve as a vital stronghold for the world's most iconic bear. Beyond housing a significant portion of the global panda population, this botanically diverse region acts as a living time capsule, preserving species and landscapes that echo the ancient Paleogene era.
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006, the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries encompass a vast, rugged terrain across the Qionglai and Jiajin Mountains. This expansive network, which includes eight distinct nature reserves and nine scenic parks, protects more than 30% of the world’s giant panda population. It is not merely a habitat for these bears; it is a critical hub for captive breeding programs designed to ensure the species' survival.
The ecological significance of the area extends far beyond the giant panda. The region serves as a sanctuary for several other threatened animals, including the snow leopard, the clouded leopard, and the red panda. Its botanical wealth is equally impressive, hosting between 5,000 and 6,000 plant species. Outside of tropical rainforest environments, this area is considered one of the most diverse botanical regions on the planet, with characteristics reminiscent of the paleo-tropic forests that existed during the Paleogene Period.
The management of this massive 9,245-square-kilometer site involves a complex integration of nature reserves and scenic parks. Notable areas within this protected landscape include the Fengtongzhai, Mount Siguniang, Laba River, Anzihe, Heishui River, and Jintang-Kongyu nature reserves. These are complemented by scenic parks such as Mt. Qingcheng-Dujiangyan, Mt. Tiantai, Xiling Snow Mountain, and Mt. Erlang. By safeguarding such a high density of biodiversity, the sanctuaries provide a rare glimpse into ancient ecosystems while actively working to prevent the extinction of some of the world's most vulnerable wildlife.
