From New York streets to the NBA: the versatile journey of Alpha Diallo
In short: A journey through high school eligibility disputes, collegiate dominance in the Big East, and international success. Alpha Diallo has transitioned from a standout at Providence to a key figure for AS Monaco and the Denver Nuggets, proving his worth across multiple continents and leagues.
Born in New York City and raised in Denver, Colorado, Alpha Diallo's path to professional basketball was marked by early challenges. After being declared ineligible by the Colorado High School Activities Association following a transfer attempt, he honed his skills at Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem and Brewster Academy. At Brewster, he demonstrated significant potential, averaging 16.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, including a standout performance against Hargrave Military Academy.
Diallo's collegiate career at Providence University was defined by rapid development and defensive prowess. After a modest freshman season, he became a vital component of the Friars' rotation, earning Second Team All-Big East honors as a junior. By his senior year, he was a Preseason First Team All-Big East selection and delivered a career-high 35 points in an upset victory over tenth-ranked Seton Hall on February 16, 2020. His ability to impact the game was evident as he led his team in points, rebounds, assists, and steals during his junior campaign.
His professional career has been a whirlwind of international movement. After signing with Lavrio in Greece in 2020, he moved to Panathinaikos before joining AS Monaco in 2021. With Monaco, he achieved significant success, including reaching the LNB Pro A Finals and the 2024–25 EuroLeague Final Four. During that EuroLeague championship match, Diallo's 19 points led the team as Monaco became the inaugural French side in 32 years to qualify for the European final. This journey eventually led him back to his roots in the NBA, signing a $1.4 million contract with the Denver Nuggets in July 2026.
