From undrafted free agent to Super Bowl champion: the rise of Britain Covey
In short: Most NFL players dream of being drafted, but Britain Covey found his way to the summit through grit and special teams excellence. After going unselected in the 2022 draft, the former Utah standout carved out a professional career as a lethal return specialist, eventually securing a Super Bowl ring.
Britain Covey’s journey to the NFL was far from a traditional path. After a standout collegiate career at the University of Utah—where he set the school record for career punt return yards with 1,092—he went unselected in the 2022 NFL draft. Rather than letting the setback define him, he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent, proving his worth through high-impact special teams play.
His ability to navigate the roster was evident early on. After being waived and signed to the practice squad in late August 2022, he was elevated to the active roster for the Eagles' season opener against the Detroit Lions. By the 2023 season, Covey had become a vital asset, leading the league in total punt return yards with 417. His performance was so significant that he was listed as an alternate for the 2024 Pro Bowl.
Covey's career has been marked by both highs and physical setbacks. He reached the pinnacle of the sport by winning a Super Bowl ring when the Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. However, the physical toll of the game has been present; in late 2024, a neck injury forced him onto injured reserve, ending his regular season. Despite these challenges, his resilience has seen him move between rosters, including a stint with the Los Angeles Rams in 2025 and a return to the Eagles' practice squad in 2026.
Covey's versatility was evident even in high school in Provo, Utah, where he played two years as a quarterback. During that time, he led Timpview High School to a 26–0 record, totaling 4,492 passing yards and 2,904 rushing yards. This foundation of dual-threat capability helped fuel a collegiate career that saw him become a first-team All-American at the end of 2021.
