From All-American standout to the highs and lows of professional football
In short: Before he was a coach, Corey Coleman was a versatile powerhouse. A first-round draft pick with elite speed, his career spanned multiple NFL franchises and a dominant stint in the USFL, marked by both record-breaking performances and the grueling reality of professional injuries.
Corey Coleman’s ascent began with a legendary high school career in Richardson, Texas. At J. J. Pearce High School, he was a rare three-sport talent, excelling in football, basketball, and track. His athletic profile was defined by explosive speed, evidenced by a 4.32-second 40-yard dash at the SPARQ Combine. On the football field, he was a prolific scorer, amassing over 3,800 all-purpose yards and 61 touchdowns during his final three high school seasons.
His transition to the collegiate level at Baylor University was nothing short of spectacular. In 2015, Coleman earned unanimous All-American honors and received the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the nation's premier receiver. That season, he recorded 74 catches for 1,363 yards and 20 touchdowns. This dominance led the Cleveland Browns to select him 15th overall in the 2016 NFL draft, where he signed a four-year contract worth approximately $11.65 million.
However, the professional journey proved difficult. While Coleman showed flashes of brilliance, including a two-touchdown game against the Baltimore Ravens, his career was frequently interrupted by physical setbacks. He suffered broken hands in both 2016 and 2017, and a torn ACL in 2019 sidelined him for an entire season with the New York Giants. His tenure in the NFL also included stints with the Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, Giants, and Kansas City Chiefs.
Seeking a fresh start, Coleman joined the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL in 2023, where he proved his talent by leading the league in receiving yards. Following the merger of the USFL and XFL into the UFL, he was drafted by the Michigan Panthers in early 2024. After a brief period in the new league, Coleman officially retired from professional football in March 2024, eventually transitioning into coaching at TCU.
