How one striker led Uzbekistan to its first-ever World Cup appearance
In short: Eldor Shomurodov is more than just a prolific forward. From the academies of Uzbekistan to the heights of Serie A and the UEFA Europa Conference League, his journey has redefined what is possible for Central Asian football on the global stage.
Born in Jarqoʻrgʻon on 29 June 1995, Shomurodov entered a family of footballers, including his father, brother, and uncles Ilkhom and Otabek. His professional ascent began in his homeland with Mash'al Mubarek and Bunyodkor before a pivotal move to Rostov in the Russian Premier League on 15 July 2017. It was there that he demonstrated his scoring prowess, most notably during the 2019–20 season when he netted 11 goals.
His career reached new heights in Italy. After a €8 million move to Genoa on 1 October 2020, he transitioned to Roma on 2 August 2021 for €17.5 million plus bonuses. During his time in Rome, he became the first Uzbek player to win a major UEFA competition, appearing as a substitute in the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League Final victory. He has consistently broken records for his nation, becoming Uzbekistan's all-time top scorer with 47 goals, surpassing the previous record held by Maxim Shatskikh.
Perhaps his greatest achievement is his leadership on the international stage. As captain, Shomurodov guided Uzbekistan to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the nation's first-ever appearance in the tournament. He continued his individual dominance into the 2025–26 season in the Turkish Süper Lig with İstanbul Başakşehir, where he finished as the league's joint top scorer alongside Paul Onuachu after a €2.8 million permanent transfer was triggered on 22 April 2026.
