The Swiss wall who rewrote the history of the Champions League
In short: From a 15 million euro transfer to the pinnacle of European football, Gregor Kobel has transformed from a Bundesliga prospect into a national icon. Discover how the Swiss goalkeeper became the first from his country to reach a Champions League final.
Born on 6 December 1997, Gregor Kobel's ascent through the ranks of professional football is marked by steady, high-stakes progression. After making his professional debut for TSG Hoffenheim in August 2018 against Rot-Weiß Erfurt, his career trajectory took a significant turn through the Bundesliga. Following a loan spell at VfB Stuttgart during the 2019–20 season, he secured a permanent move to the club in July 2020.
The true turning point arrived on 31 May 2021, when Borussia Dortmund signed the goalkeeper to a five-year contract for a transfer fee of 15 million euros. Since then, Kobel has established himself as an elite presence in the box. His 2023–24 campaign was particularly historic; he played a vital role in guiding Dortmund to the Champions League final, becoming the first Swiss goalkeeper to ever reach that stage. His individual brilliance during this period earned him a spot in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season.
On the international stage, Kobel has transitioned from a youth international to the undisputed starter for the Swiss national team. Following the retirement of Yann Sommer, Kobel stepped into the primary role, notably during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In a Round of 16 clash against Colombia, his heroics—including a decisive save during a penalty shootout—helped Switzerland reach the quarter-finals, a milestone the nation has not achieved since 1954.
