In short: Imagine waking up in a fantasy realm with no memory of your past. For the characters of Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, this isn't a dream—it is a desperate struggle for survival. They must navigate the harsh reality of being novice adventurers, where every battle against a goblin could be their last.

Ao Jūmonji wrote the Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash light novel series, which Eiri Shirai illustrated, depicting the harsh realities of arriving in a foreign realm. Unlike many escapist fantasies, the story focuses on the heavy toll of survival. The protagonists, likely originating from modern Earth, arrive with no recollection of their previous lives and are forced into service as Trainee Volunteer Soldiers under a mysterious individual named Chief Britney. Mutsumi Okubashi began a manga adaptation in 2015. The original novels were eventually published in English by J-Novel Club.

The narrative follows a core group of survivors who must learn to function as a cohesive unit to avoid death. Initially, the party struggles significantly, even being forced to flee from simple goblins in a forest. Their leader, Manato, serves as a vital strategist and a versatile combatant, capable of acting as both a defensive tank and a front-line attacker. However, the fragility of their situation is underscored when Manato is killed by a goblin archer during an ambush in a ruined city. The group eventually relocates from the forest to a ruined city. This transition occurs after they gain enough success hunting goblins.

This loss fractures the group, leaving the thief, Haruhiro, to assume leadership. The series details the emotional and physical costs of their journey, including the eventual death of Moguzo from exhaustion and the recruitment of a new Priest, Merry. As the party seeks closure and vengeance, they must grapple with the life-and-death nature of their new existence, moving from forest skirmishes to dangerous encounters in kobold-infested mines. The heavy toll of their journey is seen when Moguzo dies from exhaustion. Following this, Kuzaku joins the group to replace him.
