Karma, the X-Men's founding member who survived the Vietnam War and psychic possession.
In short: A founding member of the New Mutants, Karma is a powerful telepath whose life has been defined by trauma, resilience, and the burden of her own abilities. From fleeing Vietnam as a refugee to becoming a billionaire CEO, her journey through the Marvel Universe is as complex as her mind-controlling powers.
Born Xuân Cao Mạnh in the central highlands of Vietnam, Karma’s life was irrevocably altered by the Vietnam War. After her father, a South Vietnamese colonel, was killed, she fled the country as a boat person, enduring horrific violence and the loss of her mother. Arriving in New York, she was forced to protect her younger siblings, Leong and Nga, from their own uncle, a crime lord who sought to exploit their mutant powers. During this conflict, Karma absorbed the consciousness of her twin brother, Trân, imprisoning his essence within her own soul to stop him from harming others.
This absorption significantly enhanced her psionic abilities, which allow her to seize control of another's mind and operate their body as an extension of her own. However, these powers carry a heavy cost: if she remains in a host for too long, her own personality risks being subsumed by the host's. Her history is marked by such struggles, including a period where she was possessed by the telepath Amahl Farouk, leading to severe physical changes. Later, she navigated the loss of her leg in battle and the complex legacy of her half-sister, Da'o Cao Mạnh, eventually inheriting the Hatchi Corporation.
Karma’s character has evolved significantly since her 1980 debut in Marvel Team-Up #100. She was one of the first major lesbian characters in mainstream comics and has served as a librarian, teacher, and leader. Her journey reached a pivotal moment during the Krakoan Age, when she underwent a ritual to finally separate her soul from her brother’s. Today, she remains a multifaceted figure, having transitioned from a refugee seeking safety to a seasoned operative capable of challenging world-conquering regimes like that of Doctor Doom.
