The kindergarten student acting like a problem child is actually a supernatural protector
In short: To her teachers, five-year-old Kaya is a disruptive force in the classroom. But there is a hidden reason for her erratic behavior. Behind the scenes, she is using powerful psychic abilities to shield her classmates from malevolent spirits that no one else can see.
In the manga series Kaya-chan Isn't Scary, written by Tarō Yuri, the protagonist Kaya Satō is widely misunderstood. Because ordinary people cannot perceive the specters she fights, her attempts to defend her peers often appear as disruptive outbursts. This perception of her as a 'problem child' stems from the invisible nature of the supernatural threats she faces. Only her teacher, Chie Hasumi, recognizes the truth and actively protects Kaya from the scrutiny of other faculty members.
The origin of Kaya's abilities is deeply tied to the dark history of the Ebisumori clan. Kaya is the result of a failed attempt by her mother, Mirai Satō, to give birth to an evil spirit. This process infused Kaya's soul with the spirit of an Ebisumori ancestor. Her mother, who fled the clan after discovering their practice of using non-psychics to birth spirits for political elimination, eventually faced a confrontation with the very darkness she fled. The clan's former leader, Kaya's grandmother, once supported these dark rituals before later feeling profound regret for her past actions.
The narrative explores themes of lineage and isolation through characters like Namu Hirukomori, a psychic outcast who shares Kaya's ability to destroy spirits. While the series began serialization on Shinchosha's Kurage Bunch website in April 2022, its reach expanded globally with an English license announced by Seven Seas Entertainment in November 2024. An anime adaptation by East Fish Studio further brought this hidden world to television screens in early 2026. The anime adaptation, which aired on TV Tokyo, featured music by Kohta Yamamoto and Shun Narita.
