From French youth academies to the heights of European glory
In short: Saïd Benrahma’s journey through professional football is defined by resilience and sudden, explosive impact. From his early days in France to scoring in a major European final, the Algerian winger has navigated injuries, high-stakes transfers, and personal loss to establish himself on the global stage.
Born in Aïn Témouchent, Benrahma moved to France at age 11, eventually joining the youth ranks at Nice. His early professional years were marked by the struggle to secure a first-team spot, leading to several loan spells at clubs like Angers and Châteauroux. It was his 2018 move to Brentford in the English Championship that served as his true breakthrough, where he scored 27 goals in 83 appearances.
His success in England paved the way for a high-profile move to West Ham United. In January 2021, the club secured him permanently for a fee of £25 million, plus £5 million in potential add-ons, making him one of their most expensive signings at the time. He became a key figure in their historic 2023 UEFA Europa Conference League victory, scoring a penalty in the 62nd minute of the 2–1 final against Fiorentina.
Beyond the pitch, Benrahma's career has faced significant hurdles, including a failed transfer to Lyon in early 2024 that required a FIFA appeal to finalize. On a personal level, he has dealt with the loss of his father in January 2020, a tragedy he has honored by dedicating his subsequent five goals to his memory. Today, he continues his career in the Saudi Pro League with Neom.
His technical ability is highlighted by a strike against Crystal Palace on 6 November 2022, which was recorded as the fastest goal in the Premier League that season, clocked at 107.17 kilometres per hour. This blend of power and precision has defined his reputation as a versatile winger capable of impacting games across multiple top-tier leagues.
