The tiny university that challenged America to reach the Moon
In short: In 1962, Rice Stadium became the backdrop for one of the most famous speeches in history. John F. Kennedy didn't just use a football field as a prop; he used the Rice Owls as a symbol of American grit and ambition.
On September 12, 1962, President John F. Kennedy delivered his 'We choose to go to the Moon' address at Rice Stadium. He explicitly linked the university's football rivalry with Texas to the broader national goal of space exploration. By framing the difficulty of winning on the gridiron against a powerhouse like Texas as a metaphor for reaching the lunar surface, Kennedy sought to inspire a nation to embrace hard challenges over easy ones.
The Rice Owls have historically faced an uphill battle as one of the smallest programs in major college football. For much of their tenure in the Southwest Conference, Rice was often competing against schools ten times its size, sometimes fielding fewer total undergraduates than their opponents had freshmen. This disparity led to a period of struggle from 1964 to 1991, where the team managed only one winning season and struggled to maintain national competitiveness.
Despite these structural hurdles, Rice has maintained a storied legacy. The program produced eight College Football Hall of Fame inductees and saw legendary moments like Dickey Moegle’s 95-yard touchdown in the 1954 Cotton Bowl—a play so famous it involved an Alabama defender entering the field without a helmet. While the school's small alumni base often limited bowl opportunities, Rice remains a significant fixture in Texas sports history, hosting the NFL Super Bowl in 1974 and maintaining deep-rooted rivalries with Houston, SMU, and Texas.
Today, Rice continues to navigate its identity as an academic powerhouse in the NCAA Division I FBS. While it no longer plays its traditional rivals annually due to conference realignments, the university remains a symbol of how small institutions can host massive cultural shifts, from moonshots to historic sporting upsets.
