From Canadian prospect to NBA playmaker: The rapid ascent of Ryan Nembhard
In short: Born in 2003, Ryan Nembhard has navigated a whirlwind professional career. After a standout collegiate tenure at Creighton and Gonzaga, the Canadian guard transitioned from an undrafted free agent to a record-breaking NBA performer, showcasing a unique ability to orchestrate offenses and deliver elite assist numbers on the court.
Ryan Nembhard, nicknamed Nemby, began his journey at Montverde Academy, where he played alongside future NBA talents. His high school career culminated in a 2021 GEICO Nationals victory, where he earned MVP honors. Nembhard transitioned to college basketball at Creighton, where he immediately made an impact, winning Big East Freshman of the Year. His collegiate trajectory continued at Gonzaga, where he led the NCAA in assists during his senior season, averaging 9.8 per game.
The professional path for Nembhard was unconventional. After going unselected in the 2025 NBA draft, he signed a two-way contract with the Dallas Mavericks. He quickly proved his worth, notably setting a Mavericks rookie record with 23 assists in a single game against the Chicago Bulls in April 2026, surpassing a mark previously held by Jason Kidd. By March 2026, his performance earned him a standard multi-year contract with the franchise.
The latter half of 2026 proved to be a period of intense movement for the guard. Following a series of trades involving the Atlanta Hawks and Charlotte Hornets, Nembhard was waived in September 2026. Throughout these transitions, Nembhard has maintained a reputation for international excellence, having represented Canada in FIBA competitions, including a bronze-medal finish at the 2021 Under-19 Basketball World Cup in Latvia.
Nembhard’s career is marked by his consistency as a playmaker and his ability to adapt to new systems rapidly. His brother, Andrew Nembhard, also competes at the professional level, highlighting a family legacy in the sport. As he continues his tenure with the Denver Nuggets, Nembhard remains a player defined by his high assist volume and his resilience in navigating the complexities of the modern NBA landscape.
