The studio behind Pokémon is more than a children's brand
In short: While many recognize OLM for the global phenomenon of Pokémon, the studio's reach extends far beyond children's entertainment. From gritty seinen epics to high-concept live-action cinema, OLM has spent three decades evolving into a versatile powerhouse of Japanese visual storytelling and digital effects.
Toshiaki Okuno and Shūkichi Kanda established OLM (initially Oriental Light and Magic) during June 1994, drawing from Studio Pastel's staff. The studio's name was a deliberate homage to the American special effects house Industrial Light & Magic. This early focus on high-quality production led to the creation of OLM Digital in 1995, which became the primary engine for the studio's computer graphics. This technical infrastructure allowed OLM to bridge the gap between animation and live-action, eventually leading to collaborations with prominent directors like Takashi Miike.
The studio's portfolio is characterized by a distinct duality. On one side, they are the architects of massive commercial franchises like Yo-kai Watch and Beyblade Burst. On the other, they have secured critical acclaim for mature, complex narratives such as Berserk and The Apothecary Diaries. This versatility is managed through a unique organizational structure: production lines branded as "Teams," which are typically named after the lead Animation Producer. As of 2026, the studio manages six of these distinct production lines.
In recent years, OLM has undergone significant corporate and geographical expansion. In 2016, the Imagica Group acquired a majority stake, turning OLM into a wholly-owned subsidiary. To scale production, the studio has expanded its physical footprint internationally, establishing satellite studios in Cyberjaya, Malaysia (2017) and Bangkok, Thailand (2024). Domestically, they opened a new satellite studio near Hana-Koganei Station in April 2024, signaling a continued push to diversify their production capabilities while maintaining their core identity in Tokyo.
