From a 9-person crowd to a Japanese corporate powerhouse
In short: In 1924, a merger between two local clubs created a team that would eventually face a crowd of only nine people for its debut. Today, that same Belgian club serves as a strategic outpost for Japanese talent, blending century-old tradition with modern global commerce.
Sint-Truidense VV was born in 1924 from the merger of FC Union and FC Goldstar. To honor their roots, the club adopted the yellow and blue colors of the city of Sint-Truiden. The early years were humble; the team's very first match against Cercle Tongeren saw a meager attendance of just nine people. However, the club quickly established its identity, officially adopting its current name, Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging, in 1947.
The club's rise to prominence was marked by several milestones in the mid-20th century. In 1948, Léopold Appeltans became the first capped player for the Belgian national team while playing for the club. By the late 1950s, the team began to see significant success, notably under the management of Raymond Goethals. His leadership guided the team to a second-place finish in the top division during the 1965–66 season, which remains the club's highest league achievement to date.
The modern era of STVV is defined by a unique international partnership. In November 2017, the Japanese e-commerce giant DMM.com acquired full ownership of the club. This move transformed the team into a pipeline for Japanese football, leading to the recruitment and development of notable players such as Wataru Endo and Takehiro Tomiyasu. This transition from a local community merger to a globalized corporate asset illustrates the evolving mechanics of professional sports ownership.
Despite these shifts, the club maintains its historical anchors, continuing to play at the Stayen stadium since 1927. While the ownership and player demographics have modernized, the club remains a fixture of the Belgian Pro League, balancing its heritage as 'De Kanaries' with its role as a bridge between European and Asian football markets.
