Meet the Pudu, the world's smallest deer that thrives in the Andean rainforests.
In short: Standing no taller than a medium-sized dog, the pudu is a master of the dense South American underbrush. These secretive, solitary creatures navigate the Andes with surprising agility, yet they face significant threats from habitat loss and predators. Discover the hidden life of this elusive, pint-sized forest dweller.
The pudu, a genus comprising two distinct species, holds the title of the world's smallest deer. The southern pudu (Pudu puda) inhabits the slopes of the southern Andes in Chile and Argentina, while the northern pudu (Pudu mephistophiles) resides in the high-altitude forests of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. These animals are remarkably compact, standing only 32 to 44 centimeters at the shoulder and weighing up to 12 kilograms, though a record weight of 13.4 kilograms has been documented.
Life for a pudu is defined by caution and solitude. They are crepuscular, meaning they are most active during dawn and dusk, and they spend their lives within a home range of 16 to 25 hectares. Because they are easily frightened, they rely on dense bamboo thickets and rainforest underbrush for protection against predators like the cougar and various foxes. Their diet is strictly herbivorous, consisting of succulent sprouts, vines, and tree bark. Remarkably, they can go long periods without drinking water, instead hydrating through the moisture-rich foliage they consume.
Despite their resilience, pudus are vulnerable. The southern species is classified as near threatened, while the northern species is listed as data deficient by the IUCN. They face a gauntlet of dangers, including habitat fragmentation, road accidents, and competition for food from introduced species like the red deer. Furthermore, they are highly susceptible to parasites and diseases transmitted by domestic dogs. Conservationists are working to secure their future through captive-breeding programs and habitat protection, yet the total population size remains a mystery due to the animal's elusive nature and secretive behavior.
