The river that powers Malawi and sustains five million lives
In short: Explore the vital role of the Shire River, a waterway that serves as the backbone of Malawi's energy and economy. This documentary examines how the basin is being transformed from an underutilized resource into a managed corridor of development.
The Shire River is a cornerstone of the Southern African region, providing livelihoods for over 5 million people in Malawi alone. It is the primary source of the nation's hydro-electricity, which accounts for nearly 96 percent of its total generation. Beyond energy, the river supports national parks and game reserves, creating essential natural blocks for conservation.
Despite its importance, the Shire River Basin remains under-utilized and has been less impacted by deforestation and overpopulation than other regions. To unlock its full potential, the Malawian government has secured World Bank funding to build major infrastructure and rehabilitate the basin. This initiative aims to improve water management for downstream use in Mozambique as the river flows toward the Indian Ocean.
